The New Iberia Boy’s and Girl’s Club Design Charette will be held on February 28 starting at 4:30pm at the New Iberia Club. This effort is for the children who utilize these clubs and when you see this facility, you will understand just how much work is needed. It really isn’t a far cry from the Granberry Unit.
Please try to make it. We could use the help.
A work day has been scheduled for March 3 starting at 8:00am at the Granberry unit. Anyone wanting to help, please come.
The CD’s for the Granberry unit renovations have yet to begin. I have not received any information from Geoff, yet, about providing crits and assisting with red-lining the drawings. If and when that information comes out, I will put it here.
If you don’t already know, AIA-South Louisiana is hosting the AIA-Louisiana State Convention this year. We will have an Emerging Professionals Track woven into the session.
Beginning on Wednesday, Professor David Thaddeus will be giving a 1 1/2 Day structures seminar. This will be an additional cost, but will be part of the Convention.
Marsha Cuddeback, IDP State Coordinator, will be speaking on Friday about the
The Intern Social will be held on Monday, March 26 starting at 6:00pm in 5th Year Studio. Marsha Cuddeback, State IDP Coordinator, will be in attendance to answer any questions or concerns about IDP.
If you have any questions, please let me know. Email me at epsola_1@yahoo.com.

Hard-Hat Series
It is with pleasure that I present the Hard-Hat Series to the membership. Simply--the Hard-Hat Series will consist of site visits and tours of construction jobs around the area.
We will elicit the assistance of both the project architect and the contractor for a walking-informative tour of different construction sites in the Lafayette and surrounding areas. This will give participants the opportunity to get out of the office and see construction first hand, ask questions to the project architect and contractor, and begin to see the built form of the lines we draw in CAD.
The Hard-Hat Series will try to touch every stage of construction, from foundation to punch-list. We will also visit sites from the extravagant to the mundane, because there is a lesson at every job site.
We would also like to maintain a log of progress of the different buildings we visit. This will have to be provided by the project architect. I will work with him and an intern in his/her office to provide a synopsis of the work, time frame of completion, and the progress of construction so everyone who attended can follow the construction progress.
The first jaunt will happen in April. While final date has not yet been scheduled, only because of the time from now until then, I am hopeful that many of you will attend. I am looking for 70% complete project for our first tour. More will come as the time draws near.
This tour will take the place of the April meeting and information gathered during the tour will be posted on this blog. Regular updates on the construction process will be listed under the same title with **UPDATE** added.
I hope to see you there.

In Memory Of Jeanette O'Rourke
It is with great sadness that I inform everyone reading that my employer’s wife, Mrs. Jeanette O’Rourke, has passed away. I only met her on a few occasions, and that is a tragedy. Her caring smile brightened the room. Her kindness and manner only added to her beauty.
It is a sincere regret of mine that I will not be able to get better acquainted with Mrs. O’Rourke. I am grateful and honored to have had her touch my life on those so few occurrences. For anyone who has had the privilege of knowing Mrs. O’Rourke, she will be forever missed.
Please pray for the O’Rourke family in this time of loss and grief. Thank you.

Thaddeus and LA State Convention
ARE / THADDEUS:
If you have not already received the email about Professor David Thaddeus coming to the Dallas area, the information is below. Look at the Dallas AIA website for further details and information on signing up for the seminar.
David Thaddeus and his famed ARE Structures Seminar are headed back to Dallas!
The Associates Committee of AIA Dallas will be hosting David Thaddeus, AIA, NCARB for a three-day ARE General Structures and Lateral Forces Seminar March 16, 17 and 18
While at the University of Houston, Mr. Thaddeus developed a review course for the General Structures and Lateral Forces divisions of the Architectural Registration Exam (A.R.E.) that was first offered in 1990. He now travels around the country to provide the A.R.E. Review Course, and is returning to Dallas to offer this renowned seminar once again. Final details (room numbers, parking information, supply list, etc.) will be e-mailed to registrants Friday, March 2, 2007. The seminar is scheduled 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. each day and will be held at SMU. This class must be pre-paid; firms can register up to 10 attendees at one time (must use one credit card for all registrants).
Want to get in free? Donate $10 to our Associates Library fund and you could be one of five lucky winners - we'll refund your seminar fees! Cash donations will be accepted at check-in for the weekend, and Professor Thaddeus will draw five donation receipts at the end of the seminar; those donors will have their registration fees (up to $300 for members, and $350 for non-members) refunded.
STATE CONVENTION:
Speaking of Thaddeus, I asked you what you wanted during the state convention. Well,
I am working with him to get a one-day seminar in Lafayette during the AIA State convention in September. I will update this information when we have everything set up.
I am also working on an EP-Track for the State Convention. This will include speakers catering specifically to our needs as Associates and Interns. I have already secured the Associate Director for the Gulf States Region. His topics will cover issues such as IDP+ARE, Associate Programs at the State and Local Level, among others.
I am also working with the Louisiana IDP Coordinator in hopes that she will be available to speak about IDP, the merits of internship, and issues concerning the IDP program in relation to its significance to internship. I am also working on getting someone, or several people, from the National Associates Committee and the Emerging Professionals Companion. These are still in the planning stages, but I am hopeful.
Granted, we are still in the planning stages of the Convention. The EP-Track will be a parallel to the AIA seminars, etc. and some of the times may be identical. With your feedback and attendance, I want this year’s convention schedule to reflect and address the growing needs interns and Associates have within the AIA.
From the information I have at this time, there will be several LEED accredited speakers woven throughout the convention. I am working to transition between AIA speakers and EP speakers so we are not out on our own for the entire convention.
Please remember that this is still in the planning stages. Please reference this blog on a regular basis for more information on the state convention, ARE seminars, and all other information Associate/Intern.
